Below are the outings/events planned for February and March. It is combined due to the light February schedule. It is important that you read all the info otherwise you may miss a outing you were planning on attending.
The outings/events in this email are: NYC Day Trip, TMR Camping, Pancake Breakfast and Shamrock Swim. We have regular meetings scheduled on February 7, 14, 28, and March 7, 14, 21, 28.
NYC Day Trip – February 10
We’ll be taking the LIRR to Brooklyn and we’ll start by traversing the Brooklyn Bridge in to NYC. Cost for an off peak ticket is $23.
Then we’ll visit some interesting sites in the city. Last year we walked the hi-line which was real neat. We can stay in lower Manhattan, head uptown, we’re flexible. The boys will pick the agenda.
We’ll may also be taking the subway if needed to get uptown if we are going to go to museums. Cost of the subway trip $5.50 for two trips.
The boys should also plan to have spending money for lunch/snacks. I would plan on an additional $20-25.
We will be leaving from Huntington, time 8:36. We will be back between 4 and 5pm.
For any parents that wish to attend, it would be great to have you along. It’s a way to get involved without spending a cold wet night on a camping trip.
Deadline for sign up is Feb 7th. We’ll also plan the trip this evening.

TMR Camping – March 2 – 4
Annual camping trip to Ten Mile River Scout Camp Keowah. We’ll head up to TMR scout camps for a weekend of winter camping. We do secure cabins for use to limit our exposure to the cold. If you are tough enough, you can tent it as well. There is also a nice lake that is usually frozen and the scouts have a great time playing on it. Other activities include snow shoeing, hiking, possibly cross country skiing. This trip has been canceled previous two years due to limited interest. I know it would be a lot of fun. Please try and make this one.
Cost for this trip is $25. Deadline for sign up is Feb 21st. The scouts will plan their meals on Feb 28th for the trip.

Pancake Breakfast – March 10 (Feb 23rd for some advertising)
Annual Pancake breakfast supporting Troop 410’s Food for Scouting Initiative. Funds raised by this event will be donated to the Northport Food Pantry. We start at 6am and go to 2pm. We have scouts volunteer in four hour blocks. 6 – 10AM and 10AM to 2PM. Volunteered hours will count toward any community service hours needed by honor society, religious organizations, etc. We are usually pretty busy for this event and we need all hands on deck, as well as some parents if you are available. Also two weeks before, Feb 23rd, we will need boys to walk the downtown area asking local businesses to hang our flyer. We’ll have more information soon on the advertising of the event.

Shamrock Swim – March 18
Reschedule date for Polar Bear swim to benefit the Northport Food Pantry. This is the Troop’s other commitment to the Scouting for Food initiative. The swim time has been moved up due to the possibility of getting national news coverage. We are hoping with the news coverage that this event will be bigger than years past and will really push our donations up this year. Since the time is moved up, we’ll need scouts earlier for setup, maybe even Saturday evening. Times will be determined soon. Please keep your eyes out for additional emails with information from the Swim Committee.

Reminder notes on Troop 410 Event Sign Ups
I’m trying to make it as easy as possible to sign up for an event. However, attempts to capture scout / parent interest is not working in its current form. Asking scouts at meetings isn’t working. Sending a sign up sheet link get’s 3 or 4 responses. I’ve been told that it doesn’t work from cell phones to well, so I’m going to try one other avenue to collect information. An online Volunteer Sign Up sheet site. Each event will have the information we are looking to collect. The site works well from cell phones. Info we need to collect is generally Scout Attending, Parent Attending and Not Attending. Just add the names and info in the corresponding section.
It will look like this when clicking on the link:
Selecting one of the options, will bring you to the form to fill out. If you are filling out a scout and a parent, make sure that you put your names in each section. Scouts name in scout section, and parent name in parent attending section. If your scout is not attending, please add to the Not Attending section. For attending parents, we’re also looking to collect one last bit of info. The number of scouts they can transport. With this site there is no easy way to capture it, so I ask that in your last name field on the form, put in parenthesis the number you can transport. Example:
Ideally, each event will have a response for each scout, roughly 40 responses. I don’t know how else to collect information on interest in events. If this fails, we’re most likely going to create a parent committee to figure out the next steps on trip planning and execution.
