September 2018 Events – Note II

Parents & Scouts,

Welcome back to the scouting year. We hope you all had an enjoyable summer and are looking forward to our Scouting schedule this year.

This weekend marks our annual participation with Northport’s Cow Harbor festivities and is our first opportunity to participate in community service. Participation in this weekend’s activities is MANDATORY for ALL scouts. The only exceptions allowed are if a scout has to work, has a sporting event (includes the race) or has a family obligation.

  • Saturday – 9/15 at 7:30 am – Cow Harbor Race Water Stop – Assemble at Ocean Avenue and Crinkle Court – All Scouts & Leaders (and parents welcome as well) – Wear Class B T-Shirts & be prepared to get wet – Bring a garden rake, push broom or big shovel to hasten clean-up (write your name on it). Participation is mandatory.
  • Sunday – 9/16 at 11:30 am – Cow Harbor Parade – All Scouts & Leaders – Assemble by the large oak tree in the triangle in front of the Brosnan Building on Laurel Avenue – Wear Class A Uniforms (no athletic shorts – khaki, cargo or scout/hiking shorts, jeans or scout/hiking pants only). Participation is mandatory. It is especially important for scouts & leaders to participate in the parade as we have a number of scouts who are involved with the Northport Marching Band and Football team and are required to march with those groups. We will need bodies to fill out our ranks.
  • Also, for scouts 14 yrs & up, Mr Pokorny needs help with the setup of the food tables for Saturday’s race. This takes place in the north parking lot (gazebo/town dock side) at the base of Main Street. This starts at 6:45 am, and scouts who show up will be driven to the water stop prior to the start of the race. Participation is NOT mandatory, but all who help will receive additional community service hours. I will be there with Cameron & Dylan as will Mr. DeSimone.

Thanks in advance for helping and we look forward to seeing everybody this weekend!

Regards,

Andy Fox

Subject: September 2018 Events – Note II

Folks,

The outings/events in September are: Cow Harbor weekend activities, Watch Hill Camping trip.

Tonight 9/12 is our first meeting. We have other normal weekly meetings on September 19 & 26.

Cow Harbor Weekend activities 9/15 & 9/16

On Saturday (9/15) we work the mile three water stop on Ocean Ave by Crinkle Ct. We’ll meet at 7:45. Try to be on time as it will be difficult to get there close to the race start time as roads will be closed. During the race we hand out water to the runners. At the midway point of the race, it is much appreciated by the runners. When the last of the runners are through, we clean up the cups the runners left behind. This is a Class B dress event. Troop t-shirt is fine and you’ll also receive a Volunteer shirt from the race organizers. Please bring a rake, snow shovel or broom. There are a lot of cups on the street afterwards.

It gets hectic handing out water to the runners. I encourage parents to come help. Any parents or scouts running, good luck and have fun. I want to see 8 minute miles from all of you.

On Sunday we have (9/16) we march in the Cow Harbor Day Parade. We will meet at our normal location on Laurel Avenue north of the Brosnan Admin building at 11:30. All scouts are expected to attend the parade with exceptions for boys marching with Band, Football, Fire Eaters, or other school affiliation. This is a Class A uniform dress event. Shirt, neckerchief, slide, and shorts or pants. No athletic shorts or pants please. Drop your son off, then find a nice shady spot along the route. When done, we’ll stay at the end of the route by the parking lots so you can locate us.

Also on Sunday the church has asked if any boys could stop up after the parade and help out with some Arts and Crafts they are doing with some younger kids. It would be nice if some scouts could go up after the parade and help out. I’ll leave it up to the individual if they can go.

Watch Hill, Fire Island Camping 9/21 – 9/23

Back on the calendar this year after a two year hiatus is the Watch Hill camping trip. The campground has reopened after extensive renovation. We’ll meet at Church Friday 9/21 at 6pm to load the gear. Last ferry leaves Patchogue at 8:30pm. We need to be there then or we’ll have to rely on a water taxis with increased cost.

Cost for the trip is $20 per scout to Troop 410. Also please also bring approximately $20 on Friday for the cost of the ferry. The ferry Web site has it at $17 for a round trip ticket.

Hope everyone can make the trip. I never been there, but hear that it’s a good time for all. Permission slip due by 9/19 meeting. Please also sign up.
